How to Style your Fall Family Session

I know what it’s like.  You’ve booked a photography session for your family, but then comes the hard part….what will we wear??  After photographing families for four years, I have discovered some simple tips to help choose clothing for your family that is comfortable, classic, and flattering.

The first thing to keep in mind, is don’t be too “matchy”.  Gone are the days of white shirts and jeans for the whole family.  I encourage clients to choose 3-5 complementary colors, and feel free to mix and match between that palette.  Don’t be afraid of prints!  As long as you have a great color scheme, including prints can be a great way to add visual interest.  If you have one strong print, you may consider using more subtle prints (or solids) in the other outfits.  Different fabric textures, layers, and accessories always photograph well.

If prints and colors aren’t your thing, neutrals can also be beautiful in photos.  Incorporating whites, ivorys, and tans or grays can be a gorgeous way to go… just don’t forget to add different textures and layering pieces to break it up a bit.

I always tell my clients to start with the person in their family who is the most difficult to dress.  Typically, that is you, momma.  😉  Choose something you feel wonderful in and plan the rest of the family’s clothing around your outfit.  If you buy new clothes, don’t vary too far from the types of clothes you typically wear- you still want to look and feel like yourself!  And after all- you want to be able to wear these clothes again!

To avoid unnecessary stress, have your outfits chosen a week in advance, including shoes, accessories, nail color, and makeup colors.  This will help you relax and have fun the day of your session- which always makes for better photographs!

I love offering styling help to any of my clients, so if you have booked with me I would be happy to give you suggestions!  Let me know what you are struggling with or send me a picture of the outfits laid out together that you are considering. It always helps to get a second opinion!

I know family photos can take a lot of effort- but trust me…it is worth it!  Tomorrow your babies will be just a bit bigger and you’ll never get this moment in time back again.  I hope these tips and my support help you feel relaxed and excited about your session.  I always aim to give my families the most laid back and fun experience possible!
